Tara and I used to go on long walks in the freezing cold on a track by where we lived for hours talking about our plan and how we would get out of debt. At the time, it seemed like it would never happen. We had 5k in student loans and 5k left on our car loan. I had lost my job a couple of months earlier and things weren’t looking too great. We were nervously optimistic that we could achieve our goals of being debt free in 6 months and have a 3-month emergency fund by the end of the year.

Changes we made

2017 started off well for us. I got a new job working as a software engineer and we found out we would be having our first child. My job enabled us to go at our debt hard and we were able to pay off the car within 2 months and then pay off my student loan in another 2.5 months. We paid off the entire 10k in 4.5 months. It felt so good to finally have our debt paid off and be totally free. It took a lot of discipline and hard work, but it was worth it in the end.

How we continued to grow after getting out of debt

Our 3-month emergency fund followed shortly after getting out of debt. With my job’s 401k plan and some other investments, we were able to build our net worth to 15k. We had 25k flip by the end of December 2017!

From January 2017-January 2018 we made some drastic changes to our lives, especially in our net worth.
